The Dog That Wouldn’t Leave Us Alone
There’s a photo I never posted: a stray dog, ribs showing, eyes bright, trailing us up the endless switchbacks to Mt. Kazbegi. We tried to ignore him at first—he was just another stray, right? But he kept pace, stopping when we stopped, panting in the dust, never asking for anything.
Halfway up, I realized I was projecting all my loneliness onto this dog. I wanted to believe he needed us, but maybe we needed him. Maybe we all just want someone to walk with us, even if it’s only for a few hours.
We reached the top. He vanished before I could say goodbye. I still think about him when I hike alone.
