why the godfather still feels personal
I rewatched The Godfather recently, and it hit me differently than when I was younger. Back then, it was all about the power moves, the betrayals, the “make him an offer he can’t refuse” quotes. Now, as a middle-aged viewer, what stands out is the family—the suffocating loyalty, the impossible expectations, the slow erosion of innocence.
Michael doesn’t start out as a monster. He becomes one because family duty swallows him whole. And isn’t that the quiet tragedy so many of us face? We make compromises for family, for tradition, for survival… until one day we can’t recognize ourselves anymore.
It’s not just a mafia story. It’s a mirror for how easily love and duty can turn into chains.
