is it actually safe to let my pets drink water anytime they want?

I’ve been wondering if it’s really a good idea to let my pets have water available all day and night. I keep seeing different opinions online, and now I’m second-guessing myself. Some people say it’s a must, while others warn about overhydration or messes. My dog and cat both seem to drink whenever they feel like it, but I’m not sure if that’s the healthiest way.
