Have you noticed how kids today rarely seem to get in real trouble at school? Let me tell you a story. A teacher friend of mine recently had to deal with a student who made a bad decision right before the school buses were leaving. There was no time for gentle negotiation or sweet talk—the teacher had to act fast. The student got a stern talking-to, and yes, the teacher wasn’t smiling. But here’s the thing: some parents later complained that the teacher didn’t use a ‘sugary’ tone! Are we really helping our kids by shielding them from every uncomfortable feeling? When we were young, getting in trouble was part of learning. Now, it seems like any hint of discipline is seen as trauma. Is this why so many young people struggle with basic life challenges?
