how did my backyard go from sad dirt patch to veggie paradise?

Last spring, my backyard was just a patch of stubborn dirt. I decided to try growing a few tomatoes and herbs, even though I had zero experience. Turns out, watering early in the morning kept my plants happy and less stressed. I mixed in compost every couple of weeks, and wow, that made a huge difference. Bugs showed up, but I just picked them off by hand and let some ladybugs do their thing. By midsummer, I was picking fresh basil and cherry tomatoes almost every day.
