Anyone Skip the ER for Hospital Admits?

Has anyone actually been admitted to the hospital without going through the ER lately? It feels like every time I hear about someone being admitted, it starts with a trip to the emergency room first. Is it even possible to get direct admission anymore, or is the ER just the new normal?
