Struggling to Keep My Child Safe in Busy Parking Lots

Does anyone else have a child who absolutely refuses to hold hands in busy parking lots? My little one is fiercely independent and always wants to run ahead, which makes every trip to the store a nerve-wracking experience. I try to explain the dangers, but it doesn’t seem to sink in. I’ve tried making it a game, offering rewards, and even carrying him, but nothing seems to stick. I want to respect his need for independence, but safety has to come first.
