flight cancelled, rebooked late—should airlines pay for extra costs?

My husband was all set to fly home from Harlingen, Texas this morning, but then American Airlines just cancelled his flight out of the blue. They put him on a much later flight, so now he won’t get home until after midnight. There’s actually an earlier flight out of McAllen, but that airport is 45 minutes away from Harlingen. I’m frustrated because it feels like the airline should help with the extra hassle and cost, but I’m not sure what’s actually covered. Honestly, it’s not the first time we’ve been stuck like this—waiting around for hours, paying for extra meals, and just feeling stranded. I can’t help but wonder: is it normal for airlines to just shrug off these extra expenses? Shouldn’t they at least pay for transportation to another airport if they can’t get you out on time from the original one? And what about food or hotel costs when you’re delayed for so long?
