Last weekend, I picked an avocado from my backyard that was literally bigger than my dog’s head. No joke, it felt like winning the gardening lottery. When I first planted this tree, I just tossed the pit in some rich compost and watered it whenever I remembered. Turns out, avocados love a little neglect and a lot of sun. I also mulch around the base every spring to keep the roots cool and happy. Seeing these giant fruits hanging from the branches makes all the weeding and waiting worth it. There’s something so satisfying about slicing into homegrown produce, especially when it surprises you with its size.
