Job Becomes a Numbers Game: What Would You Do?

Today, our US customer service team got an email that knocked the wind out of me. Management says 100 of us need to leave—voluntarily, with a week’s pay per year served, or else they’ll start picking people to lay off. All because they’re opening a new office in Mexico City and need to cut costs. I’ve been here almost three years, and now I’m stuck between risking my income or waiting for the axe to fall. My family relies on both our paychecks, and I can’t help but wonder: if I take the severance, does that mean I can’t get unemployment? The dates they gave—August 30, September 20, and November 1—are looming over us like storm clouds. What would you do if you were in my shoes, not knowing if you’re next on the chopping block?
