So, I thought I could share my homegrown tomatoes with my dog—turns out, it’s not that simple. Ripe tomatoes? Sure, a little bit is fine. But the green ones, plus the stems and leaves, are basically doggy poison. (Thanks, solanine and tomatine, for making gardening stressful.) Symptoms if they eat the wrong part: muscle weakness, vomiting, even heart issues. And if you’ve got a tiny dog, it takes even less to cause trouble. Now, every time my pup eyes the garden, I feel like a tomato bodyguard. If you want to share, only give ripe, washed, stem-free pieces—and keep it small. If your dog gets sick, skip the tomatoes and try apple slices (no seeds!). Lesson learned: not everything in your garden is a snack for your furry best friend.
