Scientists have figured out (with some wild supercomputer simulations) that if you squeeze diamonds under crazy pressure and heat, you can create a new form of carbon that’s 30% tougher. It’s called the BC8 phase, and it’s so rare it’s only been seen in silicon and germanium before.
