I Tried to Pack My Mugs. I Broke My Nerves.

I thought wrapping mugs would be a quick win—just some tissue, cellophane, a bow. But the handles stuck out at weird angles, and every time I tried to bunch the paper, it ripped. I spent half an hour wrestling with a single mug, burning through three sheets of tissue and two feet of ribbon. Packing paper was supposed to be easier. It wasn’t. The mug kept slipping out of the roll, and I started over so many times I lost count. I tried to tape the ends down, but the tape stuck to everything except the paper. By the time I finished, my hands were shaking and I’d used almost a whole roll of packing tape.
