Can Folic Acid Really Cause Autism?

Had a patient today who said she quit folic acid during pregnancy because her nutritionist claimed it could cause autism. I've always heard folic acid is super important for fetal development. Now I'm second-guessing everything I thought I knew. Anyone else heard this? What do you all think? #PregnancyQuestions #FolicAcid #MomLife #Health #BodyHealth

there's a thought/theory/possibility that folic acid could cause autism IF they have the MTHFR gene variant which makes folic acid impossible to methylate correctly. their body needs folate instead of folic acid. not sure if there actual is an autism connection, but this could be the line of thought on that

“Folic acid is crucial during pregnancy as it helps prevent serious birth defects of the brain and spine, known as neural tube defects”. Take it or don’t 😂

and I read notbto long that a doctor prescribed folic acid to a non verbal child and the child started talking a month or so later. stating that folic acid the vitam of it is missing in the mother while carrying and may cause autism. so which is it? or you doctors just have no clue what you are doing or have little knowledge in the medical field.

Autism has not increased. it's simply better recognized. 25 years ago. most who are now diagnosed as having ASD would have been misdiagnosed as ID (Intellectual Disability)on the lower functioning side of the spectrum and as having ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder) on the other higher functioning side of the spectrum.

A lot of autistic people have the MTHFR polymorphism. Folic acid cannot be broken down. They need to take methylated B vitamins instead. If she has concerns, a higher quality methylated multi vitamin is best. Folic acid can increase inflammation and brain fog if you have MTHFR

nope
The synthetic form of folate, aka folic acid, isn't good for us. the natural form of folate is, though.
