Adopted a Kitten From a Stranger’s Cart

So, I’m leaving the grocery store, arms full of snacks I definitely don’t need, when I spot a tiny, shivering kitten in a shopping cart. Next to her is a frazzled woman who looks like she’s had a week crammed into a single day. She blurts out, “Please, can you take her? My cat just had kittens and I can’t keep them all.” Cue the internal debate: I already have a cat, my apartment is basically a shoebox, and I’m not exactly rolling in spare time. But then the kitten meows—like, actually meows at me—and suddenly I’m a goner. Five minutes later, I’m texting my roommate, “So, we have a new family member.
