My husband just got put on a Performance Improvement Plan at work—two weeks after he told his boss we’re expecting our first child. He’s been with the company for about a year, working in sales, and while last year was decent, this year’s been rough. The company is pretty cutthroat—if you don’t hit your numbers, you’re out. We rely on his health insurance, which is way better than mine, so the timing couldn’t be worse. I don’t think it’s discrimination, but it feels like the universe is playing a cruel joke on us. Are there any legal protections for someone in his position, or is it just a matter of closing more deals?
