Helping My Daughter Cope With Wedding Disappointment

Last month, my six-year-old daughter was heartbroken when she learned she wouldn’t be part of her dad’s wedding ceremony. She had been looking forward to wearing a pretty dress and standing beside him. After a few tears and lots of hugs, we talked about her feelings and brainstormed ways she could still feel included. She decided to draw a special picture for her dad and wrote a sweet note to give him on his big day. Seeing her smile again reminded me how important it is to acknowledge our kids’ emotions and help them find their own special role in family milestones.
