Talking to Kids About Firearms: A Family Safety Conversation

Recently, my eight-year-old son asked about the locked box in our closet. It was a moment I’d been preparing for, but it still caught me off guard. I explained that it’s where we safely store our family’s firearm, and why it’s so important that only adults handle it. We talked about what to do if he ever saw a gun—at home or anywhere else—and that he should always tell a grown-up. It was a serious conversation, but I’m glad we had it. I want my kids to feel safe asking questions and to understand the importance of safety and responsibility. Have you talked to your children about firearms in your home? How did you approach it?
