What I Did When I Saw a Rear-End Coming

I was stuck on the highway, stopped for traffic, when I noticed in my rearview mirror that the car behind me wasn’t slowing down. Instinctively, I turned my wheel left within my lane, angling my car about 45 degrees. I couldn’t switch lanes—cars were flying by at 60 mph. When the impact came, most of the damage was on the right side of my bumper. Looking back, I wonder if keeping my car straight would’ve pushed me into the car ahead.
