My Hair Only Looks Alive When I Fake It

Some mornings, I spray sea salt into my hair and pretend it’s just for texture. But really, it’s because I can’t stand how flat and lifeless my hair looks on its own. I tell myself it’s about beachy waves, but it’s more about hiding the way my hair clings to my scalp, limp and oily, no matter how much I wash it. I twist and scrunch, hoping for volume, but mostly I just want to look like someone who doesn’t care. The truth is, I care so much it hurts. I avoid mirrors until I’ve finished the routine.
