Coconut oil before beach days - yay or nay? 🥥

Planning to slather coconut oil in my hair before hitting the waves but now I'm second-guessing myself 😅 Will it actually protect from sun/salt damage or make my hair MORE brittle? Could the oil somehow react badly with seawater? I've heard mixed things about whether it helps lock out the salt or just sits there doing nothing.
