It started raining just as I reached the Tower of London. Most people bolted for cover, clutching their tickets and cameras, annoyed at the weather ruining their plans. I stood still, water soaking through my jacket, and took a photo. I’m not sure why this picture matters to me. Maybe because it’s proof I didn’t run from discomfort for once. Maybe because the empty courtyard looked better in the rain—like the place finally belonged to itself, not to tourists.
