For all of you who are dissing John Goodman and think Roseanne somehow launched his career, he started out as a stage actor performing in plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov, Beckett, Mamet, and others. He is infinitely more talented than she. She is simply dreadful and painful to watch/endure on screen. She laughs at her own jokes before she’s delivered them, and the majority of them aren’t funny. Goodman, on the other hand, has offered some incredibly rich, nuanced performances in films such as O, Brother Where Art Thou; The Big Lebowski; Barton Fink; The Hudsucker Proxy; Raising Arizona; and so many other series and voice-over roles.
Of course he looks older—he is 73! He has a gentle soul and has struggled with alcoholism but has been sober since 2007, but he also deals with severe clinical depression. He works to overcome these with daily exercise and is an outspoken advocate for mental health. As a recovering alcoholic who battles depression, I respect his strength and fortitude.
