My hubs was an aircraft maintenance manager. Pilots have the final say whether to fly or not. A lot of pilots are also mechanics. So they know what's what.

Most pilots that don’t trust their gut and take chances usually end up dead. Grew up in a family of WWII bomber and fighter pilots. All passing away of natural causes and none from pilot error or mechanical failure. Luck, maybe! Trusting your gut, probably….

I remember being on a flight that took a long time to leave the gate. Once in the air the pilot came on the speaker and used the phrase “should get there”. Got to the destination with no problem. But, the pilot’s words and the long delay was very unsettling.

A lot of the pilots in my Chinook unit were warrant officers that started out as enlisted guys who were mechanics on the birds. I was a heavy wheeled mechanic they were going to try to convert to a pilot when there was a shortage. Turned out I had hearing damage and tinnitus after Iraq and Somalia. Failed the physical.
