As someone who worked in hotels for about a decade, you can just leave but it is incredibly helpful for the staff if you let the front desk know. As you walk past the desk, you can just tell the front desk agent "I am out of XYZ room #". That is the best method imo.

Yes, you can generally leave a hotel without formally checking out, but it's better not to. You can avoid surprise charges, and you can easily correct errors in your bill. If leaving early before stated checkout time, it allows housekeeping access to your room early. This is greatly appreciated by housekeeping staff. 🥰🥰

I almost always try to check out in person so I can mention any maintenance issues I spot. I have done maintenance and so am more likely to spot an issue before it becomes a major problem. I don't try to get a discount because of it though I have heard of others doing so. The cleaning staff are in and out of the room in a matter of minutes and will often overlook anything that's not in your face obvious. A quiet word about developing problems can enable the hotel to fix things so it's better for the next guest.

I always just leave. I never saw the point in announcing my departure.
