My hunting buddy switched to crossbow to avoid practice...

I’m for anything that gets people involved in the outdoors I hunt with compound bow crossbow muzzleloader shotgun rifle whatever. I hunt squirrels, rabbit, ducks, geese, deer, turkeys, bear, coyotes, I’m into fishing, crabbing trapping, frogging. There will always be some yahoo doing something stupid. Archery hunting used to require a doctor's note if you wanted to use a crossbow that stated why you can't use a bow. Nowadays people who know nothing about archery hunting want the easy way out. If your not handicapped and want to use a crossbow it's your choice but it's also why you choose crossbow that deserves zero respect in the archery hunters community.

You still need to practice with a crossbow, it’s just like shooting a rifle. You have to know where your arrow is going to hit. Also if you miss your first shot, think about how long it takes to pull the cable back and get ready for a second shot? You don’t have that problem with a compound bow. You could probably get three or four shots off with a compound bow in the amount of time it takes you to make your crossbow ready for a second shot.

I have hunted with stick bows, recurve, compounds and now finally with a crossbow. You could say that anyone who can't hunt with a stick bow really isn't bow hunting. I found that hunting with each requires a slightly different skill set. All are lethal in the right hands. I finally gave up my compounds and gave them to a younger hunter who did not have the funds to enjoy bow hunting. I still use my crossbow and gave up the others because I could no longer draw and hold well. I used to hunt several days a year and have hunted from Tennessee to the Rocky Mountains to James Bay in Canada. Now I may be able to hunt 2 or 3 days here in Indiana. I'm 83 and pray for a few more years hunting and stands in the woods but it is more difficult each year. The crossbow maintains my accuracy.

The ethics… I don’t care what you hunt with…make the ethical shot… you tube has created a whole generation of so called “snipers”…

Ethical standards! Respect for the game! I don’t hunt with my compound bow due to shoulder issues. I enjoy still getting out there with my crossbow. I still practice and make sure me and my equipment can preform so I can make good, ethical shots! Happy Hunting! 🦌🇨🇱🏹

To directly answer your question, Ethics. I can't stand people that take risky shots. That deer is a living, breathing, mammal with a soul. Full of wants and desires. The biggest of those wants and desires is the want and desire to live, to survive, the same as me. To take a life and eat the flesh of an animal or fish is no small thing to me. I appreciate the sacrifice, and to dishonor that sacrifice with a rushed shot and prolonged suffering is low down scoundrel behavior.

You got to practice with any weapon!

Bottom line you still have to practice. Crossbow is not a magical tool that you just point and pull and down goes your deer guys who think that are the same ones year after year with gut and ass shot deer and that is not humane for the the deer.
