This Mom’s Comeback to a Bully’s Scar Comment

When a cancer survivor’s classmate called her scars “scary” and told her to cover up, her mom flipped the script in the most empowering way. Some kids are bullies. But some kids are just scared of what they don't understand (scars, medical conditions, handicaps) and that it might happen to them by association. Find a short answer that protects your or your child's privacy yet explains the condition and that they dont have to be afraid. Be truthful but also age appropriate. Be positive but not false. Once children know that this is your or your child's "normal," they will get used to it. And after that, bullies should be handled appropriately.

kudos to that mom for being 'present' and her child's life. building her child up regardless of her scars and encouraging confidence is exactly what a parent should be doing for their child no matter the circumstances. 🙏

During my student teaching (grade 9 science) we got a new kid who had just been cleared to come to school after kicking Cancer. One of the class bullies started pulling pranks and bullying him. I told the bully that I was disappointed in him and that this other kid had been through a lot of medical trauma and if he was going to act immature and mean to him, I’d make him regret it. That day, his bullying was worse, so I stood him in the corner and I told the kid he bullied to make sure he stayed there. Then went on with class. I did tell both that they still were responsible for the material. That kid didn’t bully anyone else.
