Why Everyone Wants to Go Off-Grid Now

it's tough for anybody that doesn't have experience with tools. Swinging an axe safely, running a chainsaw, driving a nail, knowledge is key to making it. Or else, you are calling people for help, and help isn't cheap. And usually, the hospital is far away. Where I'm at, if you don't carry a chainsaw in winter, you might not be able to get out of your driveway. hospital is a half hour away by ambulance. Any trauma patient is flown out of here, and that ride is no fun. Thinking it through, like, where's the axe going if I miss?, becomes a mantra.

We have some off grid homesteaders living down the road. They have the nastiest, dirtiest junked up property of anyone around us. Some people say they are homesteaders or off gridders and use it as an excuse to be lazy. Every homesteader I see is like this.

More people are becoming increasingly fed up with society as it is today and since most people don’t have FU money the next best thing is being able to drop out from it and refuse to participate in the rat race. Honestly you can do it gradually or in phases start small and learn as you go, start learning to can, preserve meat, grow a garden are great basic skills, learn first aid. As you become more proficient you’ll be preparing yourself should you decide to change your lifestyle.

My cabin has all the comforts of home. Like electricity. If I had to live like Daniel Boone I could. But I don’t have to.

If utility bills are sinking you, energy conservation will bail the boat. Electricity is my only utility, which costs me a whopping $140/month. Energy efficient windows coupled with fitted cellular blinds, attic and subfloor insulation, attic exhaust fan, reflective white awnings that are rolled up in the winter for solar gain shining on dark tile floors installed over cement board for a couple tons of thermal mass, all sill and floor penetrations caulked and sealed against air infiltration, a modern, efficient heat pump with all ductwork sealed and insulated, all appliances energy star, and all lighting LED with much on dimmers. If you plan to stay in your house, fix it. A heat pump water heater will pay for itself over time. Flippers just do cosmetic crap that increases the sale price. Energy upgrades are invisible but increase value for the occupants.
