The Charles River in West Roxbury has shrunk so much that even tiny shorebirds are strolling across the riverbed—and some locals are following suit, boots and all. The water is now so low between the kayak launch and Saw Mill Brook at Millennium Park that people are exploring the exposed riverbed, finding shells, water lilies, and even the mysterious Chinese mystery snail. Land plants are starting to reclaim what used to be underwater. This dramatic change is even more extreme than the 2022 drought.
