The apartment next to mine has been empty for months. Padlocked, power cut, no one going in or out. Around 2 AM one night, I heard a doorbell ring. Not mine— the one next door. It rang twice. Clear, loud, exactly the same chime I remember from when the previous tenant lived there. I checked the hallway through the peephole. No one. Dead silent. The landlord insists the electricity has been off the entire time, and the doorbell isn’t connected to any backup power source. But the ringing keeps happening. Always past 2 AM.
