Mark 2:27 In Exodus, God gives Moses a set of rules, ordinances for the people of Israel, His people, to follow. Rules of righteousness, rules that would make them holy, rules that would set them apart from everyone else on earth. He rested on the 7th day, not because He was tired and weary, but because He was done. It was to be a day that was set apart from all the other days, a day He made holy. This day of rest wasn’t created because He ‘needed’ it, but because we would. In Deuteronomy, the Sabbath commandment would follow Israel as they lived their daily lives in the Promised Land. It was intended to be a day set apart to the Lord, a day of rest for “your son or your daughter, or your man, servant, or your maid servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the stranger or sojourner who is within your gates, that your man, servant, and your servant may rest as well as you.” Have we lost or forgotten the Commandment? Have we been set free from its requirement? If we, who’ve been grafted into the Promise, neglect the Sabbath, is it a sin? What does resting on the Sabbath look like? Is it Saturday or Sunday? Is it as simple as enjoying the fruits of our labors? Enjoying the company of family and friends? Perhaps corporate worship? Have we left out the true meaning of what it means to observe His holy day, a day set apart for us to be mindful of Him? Time in the Throne Room… time in His presence? Time when it’s just us and Him, where we listen to what He has to say? It’s where we taste of the Living Water and eat of the Bread of Life, being restored and refreshed from having sat at His banqueting table. Lord, prepare us for Your rest, for it is but a ‘picture’ of the rest yet to come when we will enjoy Your presence forever.
