I’m white and I grew up in the 1960’s and 70’s my mom collected green stamps and as a reward for helping her lick all those stamps she said I could pick a toy. I picked a little black doll, my mom was and older mom (not a young cool mom) and she tried to get me to pick a white baby doll. I wanted the pretty black one I didn’t know why mom was telling me to put it back. I didn’t want to and made a bit of a scene about it cuz I didn’t know why she wanted me to get the other doll. I got my black baby doll and her name was Sweetie.

Very touching story. Sadly, there was only one Black girl in my elementary school and no one would even sit with her at lunch. I’m so glad that attitudes have changed so much in the last 60-years!

I have fond memories 60s n 70s doing this for my friends, actually my wife’s too do list. She taught catholic school then, the nuns would ask her to take them to where ever accepted the stamps, ohh they were funny to be with, I loved them all , mother superior was just that, superior .

My mother even got the family china with Green Stamps. One time I was playing out at the end of our long driveway when a convertible roared past, and tons of green stamps flew out of the car. I grabbed them and brought them inside for my mother. But she was really distraught about whoever lost those stamps. She made an effort to find the people, but no luck. That same china is with my daughter today!
