Proverbs 23:24 When a child is born, he already knows … selfishness. He makes his needs known and expects his demands to be met, a season all parents agree can be challenging at times. A Selfishness we’re all born with, perhaps an important part of survival until we learn the basics of living in this world. The foundation, the cornerstone, so to speak, is the most important part of training a child up in the way he should go. A child doesn’t have to be taught to be bad, he has to learn to be good, to desire to do good things, to put aside selfishness and take up the character of selflessness, to be gracious and kind, loving others. Those lessons don’t come natural and most often the character is difficult to grasp if there no example in the early years of a child’s life. The foundation is Faith and the Cornerstone is Jesus. He holds it all together, our example of perfect righteousness. Remembering no one is righteous without Him, we use the blocks of our faith and together we help our children build their ‘house’ that they would come to personally know His Love, His Grace and Mercy. It’s not always easy, we may see a likeness between Israel’s rebellion and our own children’s teenage years. They may test the ‘waters’ as they find their place… as they choose between flesh and spirit. As we consider Solomon‘s God given gift of wisdom, we can’t condemn him for his mistakes, even as he holds this wisdom, as we can most assuredly relate. But what we do know, and sometimes in spite of our best intentions and efforts, our children become who He created them to be and there in lies our blessing. We find great comfort, knowing our child’s future is secure in His Grip. Lord come before You, we lay our children at Your feet. We pray You touch their hearts, grow in them the things we missed and draw them into Your perfect Light
