My dad developed dementia at about 72. He was violent and mean. He had always abused my mom but never physically. As his dementia progressed he became more violent and more physically aggressive. We moved him to a separate room from her and eventually moved him to another place. He never forgot her and because they had been married for over 60 years he never stopped loving her. When she died, he thought she had gone back to Iowa for a visit. We told him she had passed and he went into a fit of screaming and crying. When he asked the next time we told him she had gone to Iowa to visit her brother. He was much better after that. It wasn’t worth the heartbreak he suffered to keep telling him that she had passed.
