Matthew 20:28 “…but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever desires to be first among you must be your slave— just as the Son of Man came not to be waited on, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many”. Jesus laid it all out, He clearly states His purpose for being here and His plan for what’s yet to come. As another ‘upside down’ truth, this one refers to rulers and masters, servants, and slaves. If we just scratch the surface of this truth, we might not see or understand how our being a servant, a slave, fits into being who God created us to be… some pastors, some teachers, some administrative, and some gifted to help. We’ve most likely seen and know pastors with a truly humble servant’s heart. They have the responsibility of and are accountable to the church to which they have been appointed to serve. Their meditations in the ‘war room’, reveal love, and selfless sacrifice for those in their care. The rubber meets the road at the corner of Motivation… two streets, diametrically opposed, one path is named Selfless Boulevard and the other Selfish Drive. Humility, motivation and ambition matters, they’re woven into everything we do. The other direction is similar, it has motivation and ambition with no humility, it veers into Deceit street somewhere along the way. Jesus makes sure we don’t miss the point, everything we do matters to God. The two greatest Commandments, love God and love others are etched on the hearts of believers, selflessness and sacrifice are the keys to unlocking the truth of the value of being a servant. Lord, we come before You, asking how we can serve You…serve others today. If there is an attitude of ‘what about me?’ in our heart, Lord, we would be grateful if You would take it away. May the opportunities You bring before us ignite the fire of a humble, not too serious, but joyful passion to be a servant.
