John Hanson (1721-1783) was a Marvland merchant and politician who served as the first "President of the United States in Conaress Assembled" under the Articles of Confederation from November 1781 ta November 1782. While sometimes cited as the "first president," his role was a ceremonial presiding officer of Congress distinct from the executive presidency established later by the U.S. Constitution.
