The question of the day is whether Abraham was saved by faith or by the law of Moses. Many people misunderstand Abraham’s faith. The law of Moses was not given until 400 years after Abraham was declared righteous by God for his faith. Abraham’s faith was based on his belief in God’s word and the promises made to him. By believing in God, his actions justified his faith. He traveled throughout the land in search of the promise God had made to him, not returning to the places he had been previously, but continuing on in search of it. Abraham and those who followed after him held to the same promises, but neither came into it by looking for it. It was a show of their faith that they believed God would give them the promised land. Abraham did not understand at the time that the promise was not for an earthly place but a heavenly one where God himself would dwell. Let’s read this account from the book of Hebrews. Hebrews 11:8 states, “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” Hebrews 11:13 continues, “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” Abraham traveled in the land of promise, which means where he received the promise, but he didn’t understand that the promise pertained to a heavenly place. Many today have not understood this. I hope you will.
