My son once asked me a profound question. He wanted to understand the meaning behind a particular verse in the Bible. Here’s the verse: Matthew 18:8 states, “Therefore, if your hand or foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of heaven with one hand or one foot than to have two hands or two feet thrown into eternal fire.” He further inquired, “Does this mean that some individuals will be in heaven without a hand, foot, or even with an eye? Will there be people maimed in heaven?” I pondered his question and replied, “To truly comprehend the significance of Christ’s words, one must seek divine understanding. Most people read scriptures and only see the words written. They never delve into the deeper meanings and never truly grasp what Christ intended by these words.” I paused for a moment and said, “Until you understand the kingdom of heaven and how one enters into it, the question you ask cannot be fully understood.” One calls it the kingdom of heaven, while another calls it the kingdom of God. They are essentially the same. Christ came teaching that the kingdom of God or heaven is at hand. To be saved, one must enter into the kingdom. However, if you don’t know what it takes to enter God’s kingdom, you won’t fully comprehend this scripture and what Christ meant by it: “It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God without a hand, foot, or with one eye.” Then, you avoid eternal damnation. The kingdom of God was not a physical place but the existence of God within you. The apostle wrote the following: Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. (See comment for the rest)
