I've seen all the paintings of Jesus on the cross, but I never actually understood the physiological mechanics of crucifixion until today. The Romans designed it to be the ultimate torture. You don't die from blood loss. You die from slow asphyxiation. To take a single breath, Jesus had to push up on the nails in His feet, scraping His scourged back against the raw wood, just to get air into His lungs. Every single word He spoke from the cross required unimaginable physical agony just to inhale. He literally suffocated for hours.
