How much faith does the Lord demand for salvation? The answer lies in the scriptures, but many have failed to comprehend it. The Apostles approached Christ because they were unable to cast out a man possessed by a demon. Christ assured them that if they possessed faith as small as a mustard seed, they would be able to accomplish the following. Matthew 17: “Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” When people read what Christ said, they often become discouraged because they view it as a means to measure their faith. Even the apostle asked Christ after hearing his words to increase their faith. They were thinking like humans and not as God. They were using Christ’s words to gauge their faith, much like many people do even today. However, they failed to comprehend the significance of Christ’s words regarding the mustard seed. Show me one person today who possesses faith as small as a mustard seed? Show me someone who can move a mountain with that tiny amount of faith. If you can, then your faith would indeed reach the size of a mustard seed. The mustard seed was never meant to be a measurement of our faith; instead, it was used to illustrate how little faith God requires to receive His righteousness. It was not intended to discourage us but to demonstrate God’s grace. As it is written, every person is given by God a measure of faith. Romans 12: “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” The mustard seed illustrates the minimal amount of faith required for salvation. Rather than comparing your faith to the mustard seed, recognize the amount of faith God demands for your salvation.
