Sometimes people in the dark aren’t asking others to stay there with them. They’re asking for a hand so they can find their way back to the light. When you’re healthy, hopeful, and standing in the sunshine, it’s easy to say, “Come over here.” But when someone is struggling, grieving, depressed, or broken, the light may not even be visible from where they’re standing. Compassion isn’t joining them in the darkness forever. It’s being willing to step close enough that they don’t have to find the way out alone. The goal is always the light. Sometimes people just need someone to help them see where it is.
