I came across a post this morning featuring a banner with the words “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.” As I read these words, my mind wandered back to the story of the Ethiopian who asked Philip the meaning of the scriptures he was reading. Although the Ethiopian had read the scripture, he did not comprehend its significance. Philip then explained the meaning of the scriptures to him. This account is recorded in Acts 8:27. I highly recommend reading the entire account to gain a deeper understanding of what transpired. My thoughts then turned back to the banner displayed. I wondered how a lost person could possibly grasp the meaning of these words if there is no one to explain them. I have noticed this type of posting quite frequently—scriptures being shared without any accompanying explanation. Instead of simply posting scripture, why not provide an explanation so that those who read it can comprehend its true meaning? While those who are already in Christ may understand the scriptures, those who are lost will see them as mere words on a banner or paper, devoid of any real significance. Just as the Ethiopian had no idea what the scriptures meant or who they were referring to, so too will those who do not receive an explanation.
