Inky, a common New Zealand octopus about the size of a rugby ball, lived at the National Aquarium in Napier for two years after being rescued from a crayfish pot. In 2016, staff accidentally left his tank lid slightly open after maintenance, giving the clever octopus an unexpected opportunity to escape. Inky squeezed through the opening, crossed the aquarium floor, and entered a nearby drainpipe roughly six inches wide and 50 metres long, leading toward Hawke’s Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Staff later followed his slimy trail and realized how he had escaped. By the time they discovered him the next morning, Inky was gone—and his whereabouts have never been confirmed. #fblifestyle
