In Leviticus, through Moses, God describes what loving your neighbor looks like, “You shall not take revenge or bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord “. Jesus challenges us to consider, “For if you love those who love you, what reward can you have”? In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he instructs us “Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is honest and proper and noble, aiming to be above reproach in the sight of everyone“. No exceptions, we don’t judge worthiness…no condemnation. The command is simple, “Love one another as you do yourself”…even when it’s hard, even when emotions, the flesh, cries out to be vindicated, avenged, to condone seeking ‘payback’. Love is being nailed to a cross until the body is spent… it’s a sacrificial. Love is a widow’s mite, selfless giving without expecting anything in return. Love is singing hymns in a prison cell, sharing, unexplainable joy, and peace, knowing God will use it for His glory in growing His kingdom. God even uses us when our heart’s not there as He did Jonah…his reluctant obedience saved the Assyrians, a people who’d relentlessly, persecuted Israel. Jonah would’ve preferred to see them suffer rather than watch God‘s hand of mercy spare them. The enemy of our soul prepares the battlefield of our mind as two warriors, Humility, empowered by love and Pride, fueled by hatred, face each other. We choose who takes the victory…Today. Lord, keep us from growing weary of doing good and help us, give us the strength, to choose to love. This kind of love only comes from You. Lord, cleanse our hands and purify our hearts…
