At Lima Site 85 in Laos in 1968, Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Richard Etchberger held off enemy forces while helping wounded Americans into rescue helicopters. After getting his men out, he was fatally wounded during the evacuation. Because the mission was secret, his heroism remained largely hidden for decades. In 2010, Etchberger was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor—a remarkable story of courage and sacrifice from a war America wasn’t officially fighting.
