Scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in South Korea discovered that zebrafish can naturally regenerate damaged retinal cells and restore vision. The researchers found that a protein called PROX1 prevents similar retinal regeneration in mammals. By blocking PROX1, they were able to activate Müller glia, special cells in the retina that can help generate new neurons. In experiments on mice, the researchers used an anti-PROX1 antibody delivered through an AAV-based treatment. It helped regenerate retinal neurons and delayed vision loss in a mouse model of retinal disease. The research could eventually lead to treatments for conditions such as macular degeneration.
