The FDA authorized the HistoSonics Edison System, a non-invasive focused-ultrasound device that uses histotripsy to mechanically destroy certain liver tumors without an incision, heat, or radiation. The technology is an important new treatment option, including for some unresectable liver tumors, but it is not a universal replacement for chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. The FDA indication is specifically for liver-tumor destruction, and the device has not been evaluated by the FDA as a treatment for cancer outcomes such as long-term survival.
