At just 11 years old, Rebecca Young designed a solar-powered heated blanket that folds into a backpack to help people sleeping outside stay warm. ☀️🎒 The Glasgow schoolgirl came up with the idea after seeing people experiencing homelessness struggling through freezing Scottish nights. Her design used flexible solar panels to charge a battery that could later power the heated blanket. Rebecca entered the idea in the UK Primary Engineer competition, where it stood out among more than 70,000 submissions from young people across the country. Engineering company Thales then helped turn her drawing into a working product and announced plans to supply 150 solar-powered heated blankets to six homelessness charities across Glasgow. A powerful reminder that you don’t have to be an adult to create an idea capable of making someone’s life warmer. ❤️☀️
