Supporting the First Amendment does not mean I have to agree with every opinion expressed under its protection. Free speech includes the right to advocate Democratic Socialism, and it also includes the right to criticize it. And let’s be accurate about what Democratic Socialism means. No, it does not necessarily mean that government owns every business or controls every industry. But saying it has “nothing” to do with public or collective ownership is simply not consistent with what the Democratic Socialists of America says about itself. DSA explicitly calls for collective ownership of key economic sectors, “popular control of resources and production,” and its current program advocates public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries. (Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)⁠) People are entitled to advocate those ideas. Other people are equally entitled to question them, challenge them, and debate what those policies would mean for private ownership, markets, taxation, individual liberty, and the role of government. That isn’t opposition to free speech. That IS free speech. We can defend someone’s right to speak without surrendering our own right to disagree with what they’re saying.
