For billions of years, life evolved on Earth under conditions of roughly equal periods of dark and light in most places. The sun rose and set. Night followed day. Now, one of Earth's species — humans — plans to tweak this arrangement. This week, the US federal communications regulator approved a Californian start-up's plan to launch a low-Earth orbit satellite, Reflect Orbital, with movable mirrors to reflect sunlight back to Earth
